Dr Desmond Ooi

Dr Ooi graduated in medicine from the University of Southampton and completed his specialist training in general surgery in Singapore. He was subsequently awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan Award, which supported his specialised training in vascular and endovascular surgery in the United Kingdom, where he focused on evidence-based and innovative treatments for a range of vascular diseases.

He was previously a Senior Consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), where he played an instrumental role in setting up the vascular surgery department and held leadership positions accountable for clinical safety and risk management.

His team was awarded a Public Health Grant from the National Healthcare Group to streamline diabetic foot care, leading to the establishment of the diabetic foot service at KTPH.

Dr Ooi is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and has received multiple awards for his teaching. He has contributed expert commentary to the media, including Channel NewsAsia, Love 97.2FM and Capital 95.8FM.

Dr Ooi believes good treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis and a clear understanding of the condition. He takes time to explain how varicose veins develop, what the duplex ultrasound findings mean, and which treatment options are genuinely appropriate — so that patients can make an informed decision about their care.

His practice covers the full range of venous conditions — varicose veins, venous leg ulcers and deep vein thrombosis — using duplex ultrasound-guided assessment and modern minimally invasive treatments (endovenous laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, mechanochemical ablation and VenaSeal), as well as open surgery where appropriate.
